A NaNoWriMo Tip Treasure Hunt!

The time for National Novel Writing Month, aka NaNoWriMo, is nearly upon us once again! This year, we lady pirates of YA Buccaneers have put our scurvy heads together to come up with a treasure hunt of advice for all you brave NaNo participants. And we have a prize drawing for you at the end of the journey! To learn more and get to the start of the treasure hunt, go here:

Now, for my tip. Writing is solitary work, but one of the best parts of it is meeting other writers and sharing mutual support for the joys and the difficulties of the craft. NaNoWriMo is a prime example of how that support can help people accomplish amazing feats of writing! So take advantage of this time, and use the forums and Twitter to make new friends and participate in that group energy.

And now you must head on to the next leg of your adventure with our smiling pirate Curly McGee! Don't forget to comment below and enter the Rafflecopter to get your prize entry. I leave you now with this very NaNo-relevant quote from Jane Smiley, one that you may have seen me use before. I repeat it to myself regularly:
"Every first draft is perfect, because all a first draft has to do is exist."

  1. I work so much better when I know that others are out there writing too. Its so encouraging. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Love the "scurvy heads" comment. :-) We'll have to remember to pack some oranges next time.

But I think you're so right! This is a great chance to be part of something, and connect with other writers. Plus, it expands our views of the whole writing community. Great tip, Rachel!

  3. I'm with Heidi, the "scurvy heads" thing made me laugh out loud. :) And hurray for group energy! I think that's such a HUGE part of NaNoWriMo.

  4. I love this tip and totally agree! Even though I'm not doing NaNo this year, I will be first drafting so I plan to immerse myself in the energy and excitement of the month. It's so motivating to see other writers pounding out words!

  5. Great tip! I wish I was NaNo-ing this year, but I'll be on Team NaNoRevMo this year! :)

  6. I 100% agree, Rachel! There are so many great writers out there just waiting to cheer you on -- I've met so many fantastic people during NaNo over the years!

Not sure if I'll be doing NaNo this year -- I have a WIP that's been pecking to get out and NaNo would be prime time to write it, but alas, I may have edits to work on instead. Regardless, I'll be over in the forums to cheer everyone on, no matter what I decide to do!

    Great advice, Rachel!

  7. I find that listening to Coffitivity really helps me concentrate! :)

  8. Great quote, Rachel! I will remember it when I start Book #2. Right now, working on finishing Book #1.
